Dear Diary - John H. Kerr Dam:
5/6/10 – Received Heather’s work on JHKD on a CD and I downloaded it onto my computer. I opened it up to see what was on there and began to make some changes. I created a new mxd called John_H_Kerr_Dam_050610 and I then brought in some items in the layout from an earlier mxd. I also brought in two copies of a DRG from JHKD.
5/7/10 – Spent a small part of the day making some minor modifications to the layout.
5/10/10 – Adjusted the text in the layout to make it compatible with FGDC standards, as well as our own conventions. Also put A and T’s in the cross section, where Heather had put it on top of the cross section in the layout.
5/11/10 – Started and completed changes to the cross section, including text and linework. Correcting text and linework on quad sheet.
5/12/10 – Corrected all the errors in the linework layer and then ran topology on it. Also, turned inferred lines into concealed lines where necessary.
5/14/10 – Tried to correct errors in polygon layer and just gave up after a few minutes. There were too many problems with the western polygons. Multiple points on the same node, polygons ever so slightly off, that sort of thing. I changed to ArcInfo and used the ArcToolbox to change the JHKD linework into JHKD polygons. Then I labeled the attributes table and brought over the .lyr from the previous version of the polygon layer. Talked with Phil after completing everything and found out that I have to create structural symbols from the stations shapefile I was sent. I also received an updated excel spreadsheet and a data dictionary from Heather.
5/17/10 – Farting around. Not much got done. Tried several attempts to set up tables for join. Found out late in the day that the stations shapefile didn’t have all of Dave’s points in it. Start again tomorrow.
5/18/10 – Received shapefile that did have all of Dave’s points in it. I used this shapefile to try to set up a join with Heather’s excel spreadsheet with the station data on it. In order for it to join, I had to make enough copies of station locations to match the number of measurements at a given location.
5/20/10 – Continued this process.
5/21/10 – Finished this process, but I couldn’t join the two tables. Excel doesn’t do .dbf files and Arc doesn’t do .xls files. Perfect. John took the excel file into Microsoft Access and saved it as a .dbf file. Then he gave the files back to me and I was able to join the tables. I added some lost data for some stations, then I split the data into just stations, linear, planar singular and planar multiples shapefiles. After that, I assigned different structural symbols to each type of station measurement for linear, singular and planar multiples shapefiles. I also created an excess stations shapefile where data that couldn’t be presented on the map could still be accounted for.
5/24/10 – I adjusted the center points for the multiple planar symbols. After I did that, I labeled all the structural points with dip numbers. Then I began to pull out the symbols from each other and also move the dip numbers.
5/25/10 – I continued with moving symbols and dip numbers.
5/28/10 – Continued with moving symbols and dip numbers with minimal interruptions!
6/1/10 – Continued moving symbols and dip numbers.
6/2/10 – Finished moving symbols and dip numbers. In layout, created structural symbols legend with symbols and dip numbers. Made the labels for each symbol the same as Heather’s KerrDam’07modified_hh excel file. Printed a copy to correct.
6/3/10 – Viewed map sheet, made corrections and discussed with Phil. Printed a new, corrected copy and gave it to Randy to hand to Phil. Filled out Tracking Sheet for John H. Kerr Dam quadrangle.
6/4/10 – Completed Tracking Sheet for John H. Kerr Dam quadrangle.
1/4/16 - MM uploaded latest version of John H. Kerr dam map to Google Drive:
