Hollister

Dear Diary – Hollister (and Littleton)
9/24/10 – Received data from Phil.  Georectified tifs of Hollister and Littleton and created an .mxd called Sacks_mapping_092410 in G:\MMFolder\SCANS\MAPS\PaulSacksScans_092210.
9/29/10 – Digitized the station points for Hollister and Littleton, and then digitized the extra points with no data numbers attached to them.
12/13/10 – Took a break from metadata to work on Hollister and Littleton.  Talked with Phil and decided to use “Sacks_data_hollister_littleton.xls” spreadsheet and combine the point feature classes  of Hollister and Littleton.  The quad names in the .xls weren’t necessarily labeled the correct quads, but the station numbers were correct, so it makes more sense to combine the two files and work from there.  I merged the two files “HollisterLittletonMasterStations.xls”, changed any duplicates or omissions, and then put the feature class side by side with “Sacks_data_hollister_littleton.xls” so that I could create the same amount of stations at a given location for the feature class than there are in the .xls file.  Finished at point 708.
12/14/10 – Continued placing proper amount of dots for the stations in the spreadsheet.  Completed this task and am awaiting instructions from Phil on how to proceed.  Also let him know that we were missing some points:  – 81, 116, 117, 775, 776, 777, 778, 779, 780, 781, 782.
12/15/10 – Got instructions and solved all present problems.  Finished placing proper amount of dots for the stations in the spreadsheet.  Joined the two and created a new master list:  Hollister_OrientationPoints.  Created a new folder:  Hollister_PRODUCTION, as well as a new geodatabase and dataset.
1/13/11 – Talked with Phil about Raleigh 100k geologic maps, but we changed topics to Hollister.  Phil asked if I had the latest file for Hollister.  This would be Hollister_OrientationPoints_121710.  I did, but it didn’t have the Chapter and Verse columns for the symbols.  Phil said it was there, but I looked further and looked at  Phil’s email from 12/20/10, which had this shapefile.  I downloaded it and tried to open it, but it came back with this error message:
Phil asked me to open the .dbf file for this shapefile and I saw that there were two columns dealing with the chapter and verse for the symbols.  Phil was also able to replicate the error message, so he will ask Skip tomorrow what the problem is with this shapefile.

3/1/11 – Phil sent me the Sacks_data_Hollister_Littleton_022411 point shapefile (with 1498 entries).  Phil thinned the attribute table to 21 columns.  I used the FGDC numbers he put in the Symbol column to symbolize the points for the shapefile.  Phil and John were both having trouble symbolizing with the FGDC numbers, but once they put FGDCGeoSym01 (TrueType) through 05 in their WINDOWS\Fonts folder, everything worked out fine.  I saved the .lyr file I created and sent them both a copy.
3/14-3/15/11 – Phil wanted me to produce an image where the symbols have been arranged.  So I arranged them in the new way in Arc – Categories – Unique values, many fields.  That way there will be only one shapefile for the symbols, not 4.  I sent him a png, as well as the shapefile with the new .lyr.

4/29/11 – Skip sent me the Boltin data today, one shapefile and one excel table.  I realized the shapefile was missing three station locations, so I sent Skip an email asking where they were, before I join the shapefile and the excel table.
5/2/11 – Skip sent me an excel file that had the same number of entries as the Boltin shapefile and I promptly joined them.  I then started over and created a new Geodatabase – Hollister_DISTRIBUTABLE, and I let ArcToolbox populate this.  I then opened a new .mxd and called it Hollister_PRODUCTION.mxd.
5/4/11 – Redid the Hollister_DISTRIBUTABLE, thanks to John (it took 2.5 hours!).  Put the AllStations, ExcessStations in the mxd.  Created Annotation layer for AllStations and placed the dip numbers in the correct places.
7/13 – 7/22/11 – Phil sent me new feature classes and a whole new .mxd.  I decided to use the current Hollister_PRODUCTION.mxd and bring in all the feature classes that I could use.  Since he provided the linework and the polygons, it was left to me to separate the symbols from each other at each observation station and then create Annotation feature classes for the dip numbers.  Once I did that for the four feature classes (Bolton, Clark, Sacks and Stoddard), I arranged the dip numbers around the symbols.  I also helped straighten out the symbols in the lower right portion of the layout.  Once this was all done, I began to work on Littleton.
8/1/11 – I incorporated the second version of the data that Phil sent John.  This included the contact lines, polygons and overlay polygons.  I corrected the ends of the fold lines from a > to a triangle.
8/2/11 – I checked for conflicts between the dip numbers and the newly installed contact lines.
8/3/11 – I checked again for conflicts, then I put the correct labels in the layout for the symbols.  I saved the symbols shapefiles as feature classes in the PRODUCTION folder.  I loaded data and appended the geochem/quarry points to the Stoddard_Hollister symbol file.  I labeled those points externally on the map.
8/4/11 – I put in the stereonets.  I received the cross section data from Phil and installed it into the .mxd.  I adjusted the text that Phil sent.
8/5/11 – I brought in the geochem chart and placed it in the layout.  I brought in the rock unit description text to the layout.  I adjusted it and also created the colored boxes next to the text.
8/15/11 – Made corrections from my edits of the map.  Got a couple extra things from Phil to correct.  So I did.  Almost finished with this.
8/16/11 – Added the mylonite zones data frame to the layout.  Confirmed the colors of polygons between the Hollister_PRODUCTION.mxd and Phil’s Hollister_Littleton_PRODUCTION.mxd.  Finished the layout and saved as a png.  Emailed the png to Phil and Skip.  Saved the MapUnitPolys as 40% transparent to match Skip’s 4 quads.  Also changed the colors in the rock unit descriptions.
8/19/11 – Swapped out the middle stereograph on the layout.
8/31/11 – Made corrections to the map, per Skip and Phil’s edits.  Saved the layout as a png and emailed it to both of them.
9/9/11 – Made additional minor changes, including changing the color of the rhyolite lines and dots, and adding feature classes for the inset map.  Sent a png to Phil and Skip.
1/7/16 - MM uploaded the latest version of the Hollister map to Google Drive:
