Lake Michie

Dear Diary – Lake Michie
8/30/11 – Set up geodatabase.
8/31/11 – Began the mapping after receiving the quad sheet and cross sections from Dave in the mail.  MM started with georeferencing the quad sheet.  MM then georeferenced the two cross sections.  B gave me some trouble; MM will try again on the 6th.
9/7/11 – Just added the georeferenced cross section to a new data frame and voila!  Digitized all the polylines.  Used them to create MapUnitPolys.  Internally labeled them.  Used some of the polylines to create OtherLines.  Used OtherLines to create OtherPolys.
9/13/11 – Substituted PB’s work on polylines, polygons and points into the geodatabase.  MM emailed them to him last week and he made the feature classes more better.  Then PB emailed them back to me.  MM added the SM_CODE column and put values in the Symbol column.
9/14/11 – Arranged the symbols.
9/15/11 – Started to arrange the dip numbers.
9/18/11 – Finished arranging the dip numbers.  Digitized and completed cross sections.  Created layout and added parts to it, including the text.
9/19/11 – Made edit to cross section B, per PB.  Adjusted the rock unit description text blocks to the layout.  Added a few other things to the layout.  Adjusted the color boxes.
9/20/11 – Made more finishing edits and printed out the map.  MM might have even sent PB a png image.
9/21/11 – More minor edits and printed out the map for Ken to make his edits.
9/22/11 – Corrected Ken’s edits and printed out another map.

9/4/12 – I started by downloading a zip file from PB, which contained “LakeMichie_PRODUCTION_forMike_8_31_2012”.  This had a new .mxd which contained the changes that had been made to the quad since last year.  MM placed this file into a new LakeMichie_DISTRIBUTABLE_2012 folder.  MM opened up the new .mxd and began to make changes, which included adjusting the cross sections.
9/5/12 – MM opened Dave’s new symbols spreadsheet with more points.  MM opened up excel, cut out the new points and saved it as a new file.  MM then brought that file into Arc, changed the GCS and the points appeared where they should have.  Then MM saved it as a new feature class, “LakeMichie_OrientationPointsSymbols_2012”.  MM then got some help from PB and symbolized Dave’s new symbols.
9/6/12 – MM started to undo the “squashed spiders” and place the symbols clearly around the observation points.
9/7/12 – MM finished moving the symbols around and MM then put in the dip numbers.  MM eliminated the “0” and “90” dip numbers and then started to move the dip numbers around.
9/8/12 (Sat) – MM completed moving the dip numbers around the quad.  MM also adjusted some of the linear symbols from last year’s mapping.  The linear symbols were coming out of the observation point, instead of the planar symbol it went with.
9/9/12 (Sun) – MM added symbols to the layout and arranged them.  MM then fixed some details on the cross sections.
9/18/12 – MM added more rock unit labels and added the new rock unit descriptions to the layout.  MM ran out of time today to make everything just right.  MM still printed out the map to show PB tomorrow.
9/19/12 – Reviewed the map and made corrections to it.  MM adjusted the symbols in the layout in order to bring in the stereonets.  MM will fix the rest of the corrections tomorrow.
9/20/12 – MM finished the corrections and printed out a copy for Ken to review.
9/21/12 – MM finished making Ken’s corrections and printed out a final copy for Ken.
9/26/12 – MM printed out a final copy for the USGS!  Finished!
12/31/15 - MM uploaded latest version of Lake Michie map to Google Drive:
