Dear Diary: ChathamCounty_50k_map
4/5/24 - MM made minor edits to map in a fine-toothed look at the map.
4/1/24 - PB had epiphany after discovering geodatabase on S drive in Phil folder:
CURRENT PROJECT FILE IS: ChathamCounty_50k_map_040224 on S drive at -S:\Phil\ChathamCountyGeologicMap\PRIMARY_092023_ChathamCounty_50k_map\ChathamCounty_50k_map
11/14/23 - MM made final edits, checked over the map, printed one copy for PB (maybe deliver it to CPO today) and made pdf.
11/13/23 - MM made edits that made colors and patterns similar for the rock units.
10/17/23 - MM made final corrections and made a pdf of it. Ran out of time to print it for PB in time for a CGS field trip. PB used the pdf of the ChathamCounty map from the website instead. MM printed that map out for PB.
10/13/23 - MM corrected the best version that he could find (especially in the Correlation section) and saved it as a pdf:
(NCGS_OFR_2022-03_Chatham_County_101323_BEST_SO_FAR). MM will try to clean up the folder so that working with this map in the future will be easier.
10/11/23 - MM and PB got together to try and find out what was the best version of the map.
8/14-8/15/23 - MM continued cleaning up the .aprx and tried to make sure to rock patterns in the layout were the same as on the map.
7/31/23 - MM cleaned up the folder that has this information. MM cleaned up the external hard drive, as well. ChathamCounty_50k_map_081522 is the latest .aprx at C:\MMFolder\ChathamCounty_50k_map\ChathamCounty_50k_map.
12/1/22 - MM began the process of double-checking edits. MM started by making sure that page 1 was correct. MM was making the rock units more better.
11/30/22 - MM, after consultation with PB, redid corrections to map, using both PowerPoint files to assist with corrections.
11/20/22 - MM continued to correct edits from PB's Powerpoint file. MM also had to reestablish the CMU MapUnitPolys.lyr, with black outlines to the rock boxes.
11/18/22 - MM began to make new edits, per PB. This included external labels on rock polygons. MM began to edit CMU View, before running into problems symbiolizing rock boxes.
10/24/22 - Added update note from PB to both plates.
9/19/22 - Made final corrections of lines in water and then saving two plates as pdf's and then printed out both plates. Chatham County has been assigned NCGS OFR 2022-03.
9/14-15/22 - MM cleaning up lines in water. Will print final map next week.
9/13/22 - MM completed RGB values in the attribute table for MapUnitPolys.
9/12/22 - MM printed out map for review by KT. He looked it over and after verifying everything, gave permission to call map 2021-03, after a few more minor edits.
9/8/22 - MM printed out both plates, looked them over, made a few notes to work on in the future and gave to KT to make more substantial edits.
8/27/22 - MM worked with various feature classes to fill their attribute tables. MM started working on MapUnitPolys, filling out the RGB values.
8/24/22 - MM made corrections to Plate 1, printed the Plate and then dropped off map at CPO.
8/22/22 - MM wrapped up Plate 2, printed the Plate and then dropped off map at CPO on 8/23.
8/18/22 - MM completed placing coordinates and "T's, L's and I's" around the map. MM also changed the order of feature classes, so that the order goes "World Topographic Map, NEW_MapUnitOverlayPolys, NEW_MapUnitOverlayLines, World Hillshade, MapUnitPolys" so that OverlayLines don't go into the water. NEW_MapUnitOverlayLines seem to be a little faded because WorldTopographic layer is above it. MM will look over map to move any text or line conflicts.
8/17/22 - MM placed latitude/longitude coordinates around the outsides of the map.
8/16/22 - MM talked with PB and downloaded his NC_2021_ChathamCounty.gdb to MM computer, so that MM could bring in new MapUnitOverlayLines and Polys and delete old versions. MM also used this occasion to simplify and synthesize the data for Chatham County. LATEST_050922_ChathamCounty_50k_map is the new folder that contains the new aprx ChathamCounty_50k_map_081622.
7/19/22 - MM made a few final touches in layout in the Explanation of Map Symbols area and the blocks of text. MM saved Plate 1 and 2 as pdf's and emailed to PB. Printed out the two plates.
7/18/22 - MM put final cartouches on Plates 1 and 2 and will print out maps tomorrow.
6/1/22 - Per PB's suggestion, modified the CMU by moving some Triassic rock unit blocks and tightening up the area to match PB's powerpoint. MM added 5 stereonets to layout in bottom left portion.
5/18/22 - MM began 2nd sweep of the map to make small edits.
5/15, 5/17 - MM adjusted text and lines to reflect change in scale of map. MM completed first sweep of map. MM will try for second sweep on 5/18
5/11-12/22 - MM corrected most of edits from PB in preparation for him to give map to man making presentation of Chatham County geology on 5/15. Edits involved adjusting text to the increase of size and adjusting dip numbers. Also MM labeled important faults and adding "D" and "U"'s to the faults.
5/9/22 - MM producing the map for Chatham County people. MM made some changes, like setting the reference scale to 1:50,000 and changing the text of rock unit label to 12 and the dip numbers to 10.
4/20/22 - MM bolded the rock unit text in layout. MM added 6 lamprolyte points to map and added MPlamp to layout and CMU.
4/18-19/22 - MM made final changes to layout, including breaking into two plates and putting the colored rock boxes on three coastal plain units. MM saved the two plates as two pdf's (east and west), and emailed them to PB.
4/12/22 - Per PB suggestions, added Cokesbury coastal plain units by going into ArcMap, retrieving JN latest Coastal Plain Units, taking out Qal, saving it as a shapefile, bringing it into Pro, clipping only Cokesbury units, then copy-pasting into MapUnitOverlayPolys feature class. Then do the same thing again for the polylines and saving in the MapUnitOverlayLines feature class.
4/6/22 - MM improved the layout, by tightening the layout from 120" to 103", matching the rock unit boxes to rock unit descriptions, arranging the explanations of map symbols. MM made all rock unit boxes in CMU the same dimensions, per PB.
4/5/22 - MM changed the name of the layout live version of the folder from BACKUP_102221_ChathamCounty_50k_map to LATEST_040522_ChathamCounty_50k_map. Some work on the layout had been done a couple of weeks ago for PB field trip. THIS IS THE LATEST VERSION OF THE LAYOUT.
2/16/22 - MM decided to import an NC DOT roads layer and clip it to the borders of the map. Unfortunately, this took a lot longer than expected. MM then manually clipped the roads outside of the boundary box and prepared for more work on this tomorrow.
2/15/22 - After PB suggested that the base map and the polygon colors match the colors on the layout, MM decided to look into the matter.
11/19/21 - After a Teams meeting with PB and YM (Yates McConnell), MM saved the ChathamGeMS_Level2_2021.gdb to SharePoint so that YM could take possession of it and fine-tune the tables so that it could get ready for GeMS Level 3.
MM NO LONGER HAS THE LATEST GDB.
11/5/21 - Under PB's supervision on Teams, MM changed Zhasi to Zhabsi, internally, externally and in the MapUnitPoints feature class. MM also made a couple of other edits in the Silk Hope area. MM added 5 stereonets from EM to the layout.
10/19-25/21 (off and on) - move the dip numbers around the symbols for Emily's new points. Completed the task on 10/25.
10/7/21 - MM brought in 532 additional points from EM and copied and added those entries to the AdditionalPoints_Emily feature class in the GeologicMap Feature Dataset.
9/30-10/1/21 - MM started correcting the validation, but realized with PB help, that something was wrong. MM ran the Verify Database again and things worked well. MM started correcting attribute details and, later, asked PB for help with attribute tables.
9/28 - MM ran a Validate Database on the map. MM found various errors and will work on it on 9/30, with PB's permission.
9/21/21 - MM completed moving dip numbers around the symbols.
9/17/21 - MM created an ObservationPoints feature class, starting with bedding. MM then loaded the remaining four symbol feature classes (total of 432 entries). MM then began the process, in the attribute tables, of including the Fields for SM_CODE, and Symbol. MM added the SM_CODE entries (they were all "1"), and during this process, MM deleted 3 duplicate entries. MM created annotation of ObservationPoints and started moving dip numbers around the symbols.
9/16/21 - EM gave MM 5 symbol feature classes (bedding, cleavage, foliation, layering and welding/compaction). MM added them to the Chatham County map.
9/14-15/21 - MM arranged layout and adding pieces so that it would be a more complete mark-up. Once that was completed, MM created a pdf and shared it with PB by way of Drive.
9/10/21 - MM completed verifying external labels of polygons.
9/9/21 - MM continued verifying external labels of polygons.
9/8/21 - MM began a sweep of the County, starting from the NE corner, to verify that each label matches the underlying polygon.
9/3/21 - MM completed first sweep of placing labels on the map. MM brought Version 8/25/2021 text from PB and put the text into layout. MM widened layout to 110 x 42
inches.
8/20, 24, 25 27, 31 & 9/1/21 - MM moved rock unit labels around Chatham County. On 8/25, MM brought to the layout the text for Chatham County from PB. On 8/30, MM printed map to see its progress, at 1:60,000.
8/13/21: MM created annotation files for MapUnitOverlayPolys and MapUnitPolys. MM began to arrange the annotations where they would work best. MM moved CMU in the layout to the right side.
8/11/21: MM worked on CMU today, drawing all the polygons, lines and text. MM then re-established the indexes for Chatham County and the 24k quads for the county.
8/10/21: MM copied CorrelationOfMapUnits feature dataset from Moncure to ChathamCounty_50k_map.gdp. MM erased entries in CMU_MapUnitPolys and created new polygons on top of CMU_ChathamCounty_Combined.tif.
7/29/21: MM focused on standardizing updates to the attribute tables - i.e., making sure all the 01.01.05 values have the same type - inferred.
7/28/21: PB sent MM, by way of Google Drive, ChathamCountyNC_GeMS_Level2-database_With_July2021_Edits. This folder had ChathamGeMS_Level2_2021.gdb in it. MM opened up Pro and created a project - ChathamCounty_50k_map. MM then opened a template and put the feature classes from ChathamGeMS_Level2_2021.gdb/GeologicMap feature dataset in it. MM then created a layout and started to place the items in the layout, such as text and indexes. MM then began preparing the symbols for the layout by symbolizing the lines. MM let PB know that the attributes were not symbolized and needed fixing. PB said to fix some of them and now MM had the latest version of ChathamCounty geology.
