Zebulon

7/16/14 – PB wanted MM to create a map package of this quad for him.  So MM went to the E drive and brought the stuff over to the C drive.  MM also included the Zebulon_042114.mxd.    MM enamed it Zebulon_PRODUCTION and reestablished links to the shapefiles now that they’re in the C drive.  I made the coordinate system NAD 83 meters.  MM formatted the shapefiles, so that they’re uniform to FGDC.
7/17/14 – MM brought in John’s ZB_MapUnitPolys_Final feature class for the coastal plain units.  MM gave it the coastal plain layer file from Edmondson.  MM started working with the points.  MM changed Al and Bob’s observation points to Zebulon_OtherPoints.  I’m now trying to change Zebulalbobfoliations into an OrientationPoints feature class by straightening out the attribute table.
7/18/14 – MM created OrientationPoints, OtherLines,  ContactsAndFaults and MapUnitPolys.  MM created an annotation layer for the dip numbers and then moved them into their correct positions.  MM labelled the polygons.  MM put in the corner coordinates.
7/21/14 – MM finshed off the quad by bringing in the pavement from MapInfo, placing the text outcrop locations on the map and arranging the symbols legend.
8/13/14 – PB takes data from Zebulon_OtherPoints andOrientationPoints, and the “locations discussed in text’ and creates new file: Zebulon_Points_2014_Update.  This file matches Garner and Bunn West with respect to columns in attribute table.  Katerina Pascht (summer intern) will add A. Speer’s field note text to data table.
Emailed Evan Kane to confirm that he is the main author for the Coastal Plain for Zebulon – He is.
8/15/14 - MM had Evan Kane’s Data Points Map from CPO work scanned as a tif and MM georegistered it in Arc 10.as  Zebulon_CPO_DataPointsScan_Rectified.tif  Then MM on-screen digitized the 400 data points on the quadrangle.  MM await PB instructions on what to do next.
9/8/14 – MM brought these data points into the .mxd and renamed them Zebulon_OtherPoints_CPO.  MM added these points to the layout explanation.  MM put labels on the Core Holes and the Auger Holes.  MM made other adjustments to the text in the layout, and also shrunk the layout to 29” wide.  MM saved the layout as a pdf and emailed it to PB.
9/17/14 – MM started making edits per Phil’s email on 9/16.  The only edit MM didn’t fix today was with the symbols in the crystalline/coastal plain section.
9/18/14 – MM made a Bedrock units and a Coastal Plain units section on the symbols section of the layout.  MM made a couple of other changes and sent Phil a pdf of the map, along with some thoughts on things to fix.
9/22/14 – MM received an email from PB with his response to my things to fix.  MM changed some diabase lines from concealed to inferred and concealed them through Qal and coastal plain units.  MM also made some adjustments to the layout with Jd and pavement.
9/24/14 – MM made a couple more edits; one with the Jd in the rock unit descriptions and  MM added Draft Manuscript Map at the bottom.
10/16/2014 - Katerina Pascht is completing the A. Speer field note entries into point geodatabase.  This file needs to be reviewed, provided to MM added to Manuscript color version of map.  Need to add acknowledgement text for Katerina’s work.

12/31/15 - MM uploaded latest version of Zebulon map to Google Drive:

Wilton

Dear Diary - Wilton
1/17/13 – MM has begun to edit this map again after many months.  PB gave me a map with edits on it and MM made most of those changes, probably six months ago.  MM will try and finish the rest of the edits today.  MM then made some minor changes and then printed it out for PB.
1/23/13 – MM had to make some more additions – MM added four stereonets to the map.
3/19/13 – MM changed the layout to landscape and moved a lot of the pieces around.  Once completed, MM printed out a copy for PB.
3/20/13 – MM added the geochem table and the geochemical points shapefile.  MM made minor adjustments to the layout in the Other Features section and then MM saved a pdf for PB.
3/21/13 – MM merged all the structural symbol feature classes into one feature class, Wilton_OrientationPoints.  Tomorrow, MM will make a .lyr for this feature class.
3/22/13 – MM made a partial .lyr for Wilton_ObservationPoints and MM then began a fine-toothed comb review of the quadrangle and the proper placement of the symbols.
3/25/13 – Continuing placement of symbols.  MM noticed that Robitaille’s symbols came in without Azimuth and Incline.  MM changed the Azimuth and Incline in Robitaille’s shapefile from Double to Float.  MM then swapped out old Robitaille’s points with new Robitaille’s points.  MM noticed that the symbols had changed 180 degrees to the correct alignment.
3/26/13 – Finished placement of symbols.
3/28/13 – MM did administrative tasks.  MM organized the DISTRIBUTABLE and PRODUCTION folders.
5/14/13-5/16/13 – MM received an email from PB with an updated data dictionary and an updated ObservationPoints feature class, with an updated layer file.  MM used the data dictionary to update the structural symbols in the layout of the map.  MM also used the new feature class and the layer file to improve the look of the map.  MM then made sure that the multiple symbols touch in the correct station locations.
5/24/13 – Started at the upper left of the quad and double-checked the placement of symbols.  MM completed this check and emailed Phil a pdf of the Wilton quad.
8/7/14 – MM began to work on PB’s edits.  MM transferred the CZgb explanation from Oxford and put it in the layout.  MM redid the Geologist Index in Map View, saved it as a pdf, deleted the Map View, and put the pdf in the layout.  MM saved the Quad Index as a pdf, brought it in the layout as a pdf and deleted the Map View.  MM did the same with the two cross sections.  When this was completed, MM saved the .mxd as a pdf and emailed it to PB.
8/8/14 – MM made minor edits to the layout, per PB’s email.  MM also saved the cross sections as 600 dpi jpegs, which were sharper than 1000 dpi pdf’s.  Weird.  MM saved the layout as a 280 dpi pdf and emailed it to PB.
12/31/15 - MM uploaded latest version of Wilton map to Google Drive:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BxSMuI20Ka_kdFBRdGpWMVllR00

3/11/16 - MM printed out the map to look over.

3/14/16 - MM made corrections to map and edited the corrections.  MM also started to sweep the map, because the symbols didn't look quite right.  Multiples weren't quite at their correct locations.  After one back-and-forth sweep, MM activated wiltwsidestationsmerged and dbwiltstationloc as dots to verify the correct locations.  MM looked at the Data Dictionary and reloaded the Wilton_OrientationPoints_May2013.lyr.  It didn't seem to be the default symbolization.  MM investigated more and the Wilton_OrientationPoints_May2013.shp did not have Categories under Symbology/Properties, therefore the symbols were invisible.  MM deleted the shapefile and reloaded it, then added the Wilton_OrientationPoints_May2013.lyr.  The points became visible again.  MM will sweep the map tomorrow and correct any issues.  MM will also consult with PB to standardize the polygon names of the quads around Wilton.

4/15/16 - MM made additional corrections, including changing the enclave foliation symbols, and the shear polygons in the quad and CSA and CSB.  MM also changed the shear lines and added diabase contacts to the legend.

8/2/16 - MM changed Trsb, CZfu and CZmca colors to match Grissom.  MM added Adjoining 7.5' Quadrangles to layout.

8/9/16 - MM made changes to CZgr (now CZtc), CZhdi (now CZmd), CZgr (now CZvgr), CZgr (now CZvgr), CZgrf (now CZvgrf), CZrc (now CZrcg), Pwp (now PPwg).  MM also added NC logo and updated upper left and upper right of layout.  MM also brought shear polygons into MapUnitPolys feature class.  MM printed map for PB review.

8/10/16 - MM changed the color of CZtcf to match Oxford.  MM also changed the shear contacts to match Oxford.  MM printed map for PB review.

8/16/16 - MM added new STATEMAP text to map, per PB.

8/23/16 - MM made extensive edits after PB review and made printout for PB final review.

8/25/16 - MM made final edits to Wilton.  MM also replaced geochem table in layout, per PB.

White Cross

Dear Diary - White Cross

10/19/18 - MM, as part of the Piedmont Compilation project, turned the White Cross contacts into ContactsAndFaults_WhiteCross and OtherLines_WhiteCross.  MM also turned White Cross Qal polygons into OverlayPolys_WhiteCross and White Cross new polygons into MapUnitPolys_WhiteCross.  MM also made layer files for all four feature classes and  brought them into the Piedmont Compilation.mxd.  In order to do all this, MM had to create a DISTRIBUTABLE file geodatabase, instead of the Personal Geodatabase that White Cross is currently in.

Stem

Dear Diary – North Stem

9/2/09 – I received paper copies of Dave’s northern Stem geologic map and the cross section B.  I also received by email a copy of his spreadsheet (StemQuad_09.xls) and his rock unit descriptions (StemAll_Northern_MapUnits.doc).

9/3/09 – I scanned the geologic map and scanned the cross section.  I then rectified both scans as tifs.  I also brought in Dave’s spreadsheet and created a feature class for all his stations.

9/8/09 - I digitized the contacts of the cross section.  I rotated the tif 7.3 degrees so that it would appear level in the layout.  I used ArcToolbox to turn those lines into polygons.  I also added text labels to the cross section and placed this into the layout

9/9/09 – I digitized the contacts of the northern portion of the geologic map.  I then used ArcToolbox to turn those contact lines into polygons.  I then digitized the Qal contacts.

9/10/09 – I used ArcToolbox to turn those contacts into polygons.  I then put text labels on the Qal and the other geologic units in the northern portion of the map.

9/13/09 – On Sunday, I broke up the stem_all_stations_090309 feature class into the four different feature classes for the structural symbols.  I then arranged them properly and also arranged the dip numbers around those symbols.

9/14/09 - I put the rock unit descriptions into the layout (that had already been created from last year’s Stem geologic map) and arranged them properly.  I printed out a copy of the map and made corrections to the map.

9/15/09 – I rearranged the map to conform to FGDC specifications.  I printed out a copy of the map.

9/16/09 – I made corrections to the map and printed another copy of it.

9/17/09 – Dave was here.  I made more corrections and changed some things because he requested them.  He also answered a couple of questions that I had.  I created a few Tsg polygons and extended the CZbto polygon down to the upper cross section line, because I had missed it earlier.  I printed out another copy.

9/22/09 – Received corrections to Dave’s map and made all the corrections.  Also changed the rock unit labels to 8 Arial, instead of 9 Arial Bold.  Also changed the Tr to the proper <FNT name="FGDCGeoAge" size="9">^</FNT> Tr symbol wherever it occurred.

10/7/09 – Began metadata on Stem.  I started with refurbishing the metadata for the southern portion of the quadrangle.

3/23/11 – Not quite sure where the Southern part of Stem went, but oh well.  I’m starting today to reconfigure the layout from portrait to landscape per FGDC regulations.  This is all part of refurbishing this quadrangle into a DISTRIBUTION/PRODUCTION format, with metadata.  Completed the change from portrait to landscape.

3/24-3/28/11 – Changed all of the files into feature classes in new geodatabase in the CamelCaseFormat.  Had problems with CrossSectionB and had to redo the Data View entirely.

4/18-4/19/11 – Finished changing the format of new geodatabase to new standards.  Created geodatabase layer files, and created shapefiles and corresponding layer files.  Did topology on Stem_MapUnitPolys and for some reason, most of the polygons had 5 copies of each polygon.  I spent a good amount of time getting it back down to 1 each.  Saved new copy of PDF and TIF for the G: .  Saved new layer files for the polygon layers after I saved Cambrian symbol back to a C and Triassic back to a Tr.

4/20/11 – Finished.  I think,  Double-checked the topology, made a few resulting changes, saved the new polygons or polylines and stopped.

1/4/16 - MM updated latest version of the Stem map to Google Drive:

8/2/16 - MM changed color of CZbto to match color in Wilton.

Silk Hope

Dear Diary – SilkHope

3/30/22 - Per PB suggestions, MM changed the date of the Correlation from 2022 to 2021. Also, MM verified that LiDAR was underneath the inset for traverse in layout. MM saved layout as pdf, sent it to PB and then printed out a map, to be delivered to PB at CPO.
2/18/22 - MM made corrections to the layout (and a couple of OtherPoints locations and the CSA) from an email, with pictures, that PB sent. MM then sent PB a jpeg of completed edits.
11/23/21 - MM did many things today, including making the diabase symbols visible, labelling the Jd lines, putting a box around the Correlation diagram and adding a topo base to the traverses. MM used a printed copy to make these changes and when completed, saved a .jpg for PB.
11/17/21 - MM completes the Correlation Diagram and it is now in the Layout.
11/16/21 - MM begins the process of working on the Correlation Diagram.
11/12/21 - MM labeled the Qal polygons. MM broke up contacts going through the Qal polygons and made them concealed. MM added new entries from the new feature classes to the layouts and arranged them in the layouts.
11/10/21 - MM brought in OtherPoints_SilkHope_2014_2021_2022 and symbolized the points. MM brought in MapUnitPoints_SilkHope2021 and turned the rock unit labels into an annotation label - MapUnitPoints_SilkHope2021Anno2. MM then labeled all the rock units for the map.
11/5/21 - MM added 3 stereonets to the layout. MM added the geochem diagram, from EM. MM added CSA to the MapView and the layout. MM made a change in the rock unit from Zhasi to Zhabsi.
11/2-3/21 - MM continued moving dip numbers around the symbols, until that task was completed on the 3rd. MM then started adding items to the layout that were given to him by PB on the 2nd. MM inserted rock unit descriptions, references and title text to the map. MM also added the traverses (Traverses_Chatham_2015_Present) and the Correlation diagram polylines and polygons.
11/1/21 - MM fixed problems with combining the two points layers and getting dip numbers to show up on top of the symbols. MM started to move the dip numbers around the symbols for the whole quad.
10/28-29/21 - MM tried combining the existing points with Silk Hope and the new points from PB. Something is wrong with the existing points, because it has a column Inclinatio, while the new points have a column for Inclination. On 10/29, unable to figure out what's going on. Will study more next week. MM did arrange dip numbers around many of the symbols.
10/27/21 - MM got points file (Points_Master_SilkHope_21_22_NoDomains) from PB, along with the text (Silk Hope_Intro_and_Description_2021-2022) that will go into the layout. MM discovered that SilkHope in ArcMap was in a personal geodatabase, not a file, so that will cause some difficulties.
10/26/21 - MM began work on this quad again.
9/24/21 - MM added map views in layout for Correlation, GeologistIndex and Traverses.
9/23/21 - PB wants MM to start new layout in Pro. MM created new Pro folder in SilkHope folder in Statemap-Chapel Hill. MM kept old underlying GeoTIFF image and eliminating all other feature classes from the MapView. MM added this GeoTIFF to the layout. MM updated corner coordinates.
Old (below) New (above)
5/13/14 – MM created the DISTRIBUTABLE and PRODUCTION folders and placed the SilkHope_GeoTIFF_from_GeoPDF_clear.tif in the PRODUCTION folder after receiving it from PB.
5/29/14 – MM created the DISTRIBUTABLE geodatabase using ArcToolbox, and this process also created the feature dataset and feature classes.  MM opened a .mxd and brought in the GeoPDF to start creating a layout.  MM started populating the layout with scale bar, declination, index map, disclaimers, titles, symbols and contacts.  MM brought in the longitude and latitude coordinates in the quad view and adjusted them to Silk Hope.  MM also created white boxes to hide the yellow overlap of the .tif and brought over the colored rock unit boxes, along with their descriptions.
6/2/14 – MM brought files into the Silk Hope production folder from the T drive.  HH emailed me to pick the files up.
6/11/14 – MM is assessing what MM have here.  MM transferred feature classes from HH’s Production folder to my DISTRIBUTABLE folder.  MM brought everything else into the DISTRIBUTABLE folder.  MM grabbed what MM had done in an earlier .mxd (and had wound up in the Recycle bin) and brought it into the current .mxd.
6/12/14 – MM brought in the stereoscopes.  MM turned on the text for the Correlation polygons.  MM brought in the lat/long coordinates.  MM brought in the rock unit description and the colored boxes.  MM also brought in all the assorted text from the rock unit description.  MM whitened the edges of the GeoTIFF.  Tomorrow, MM will put in the SM_CODE for the MasterPoints.
6/13/14 – MM was dealing with the symbols today.  MM first added the SM_CODE column and populated it.  Then MM added the Symbol column and populated it.  Then MM adjusted the Symbol values to reflect their SM_CODE number.  Then MM started adjusting the symbols placement on the map.  MM finished adjusting the symbols and then made an annotation layer for the dip numbers.  MM noticed that with my new procedure for doing as much as MM could in the spreadsheet, that MM changed some numbers from, say, 4.3.4 to 4.3.5 and instead of moving the triangle from one side to the other, it was just reversing the triangle, basically reversing the symbol incorrectly.  MM got rid of the stuff ending in5 and hopefully that took care of the problem.  Actually, for some reason, the symbol selector was doing the .5 symbols backwards instead of upsidedown.  MM fixed that, and tried to restore the symbols to what MM had before.  MM had a couple more to do when MM left.
6/16/14 – MM continued moving the dip numbers around the symbols until MM finished the task.
6/17/14 – MM dotted the contact lines through the Qal units.  MM turned the fold axes magenta and placed the symbols for the lines on the map.  MM labelled the diabase contacts.  MM labelled the rock units, then the Qal units.  Then MM spent a lot of time in the legend section getting all the symbols, lines and points, as well as making the text looking pretty.  MM also had to decorate two lines to be doubly plunging.
6/18/14 – MM worked on the cross section and added labels to the rock units and all the tick marks throughout the cross section.  MM printed a paper copy and found errors that needed to be fixed.  MM added a new space filler for the Geochemistry analysis from HH.  Once MM corrected all the errors, MM printed the map again to give to HH and PB this afternoon.
6/24/14 – After receiving the paper map from RB a few days ago, MM made all the corrections to the map and sent HH and PB a pdf of the map.
6/25/14 – HH sent me a pdf with the corrections.  MM made all the changes and emailed her and PB back the new pdf.  HH sent me a pdf with a few changes, which MM corrected, and then MM printed out a map for Ken to correct.
12/31/15 - MM uploaded latest version of the Silk Hope map to Google Drive:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BxSMuI20Ka_kb1VVNENlSXpaUjg

8/3/16 - MM changed Zhadlt (u) to Zhablt.  This included changes to CSA and Correlation Diagram.  This map is now called OPEN FILE REPORT 2014-02  Revision-01 (2016).

Siler City NE

Dear Diary – Siler City NE
6/5/15 – MM started layout by bringing in the Black Mountain .mxd.
6/8/15 – MM set up the SilerCityNE folder with DISTRIBUTABLE and PRODUCTION folders.  MM brought in Siler_City_NE_geoTIFF_with_collar_for_deliverable.tif  MM also brought in Siler_City_NE_Master_station_data and Siler_City_NE_Other_Points.  MM saved these as feature classes in the new folders.  MM added SM_CODE and Symbol columns to the attribute table for SilerCityNE_OrientationPoints.  MM added SM_CODE and Symbol values to the columns.  MM then added the rotated points to the quad sheet.  Tomorrow, the dip numbers.
6/9/15 – MM adjusted symbols to spread them out.  MM then began to place the dip numbers around the structural symbols.
6/10/15 – MM finished placing dip numbers around symbols.  MM brought in the stereoscopes to the layout.
6/11/15 – MM brought in symbols and their text to layout.  MM made symbols on layout for Other Features and Prospects and Quarries.  MM brought in Qal lines and polygons.  MM brought in HH’s diabase/lineaments file, as well as HH’s bedrock contacts and polygons.  MM made external labels of polygons.  MM labelled the diabase contacts and symbolized the lines.
6/12/15 – MM brought the lines into the layout and arranged them in the layout.  MM arranged the dip numbers after the linework came in to the quad.  MM and PB called up HH and she put on the T drive files for:  CSA linework, Traverse linework and new bedrock polygons and polylines.  The old polygons and polylines will be discarded.  These were saved into the dataset for SilerCityNE_DISTRIBUTABLE, basically overwriting the old feature classes for OtherLines, ContactsAndFaults and MapUnitPolys.  MM relabeled the new polygons and will work on breaking up the new linework in Qal and making CSA polygons on Monday.
6/15/15 – MM brought in the correlation diagram from the T drive.  MM has turned some inferred lines into concealed as they contact the Qal.
6/16/15 – MM created and labelled CSA polygons from the CSA_ContactsAndFaults feature class and brought the CSA Map View into the layout.  MM shrunk the layout from 44” wide to 42” wide.  MM worked on the Correlation Diagram.  Also minor adjustments and additions to the layout.  MM received the unit descriptions from HH and he put them in the PRODUCTION folder.  Then MM put the descriptions in the layout, made them better, then saved the layout as a pdf.  MM sent a pdf of the layout to HH, PB, and RB.
6/17/15 – MM printed a paper copy and made edits to the map.  HH sent a powerpoint document with edits to the map.  MM began to work on this.
6/18/15 – MM completed HH, PB and RB edits.  Then MM complete some additional edits.  MM printed out the map for delivery to HH tomorrow.
6/22/15 – MM made edits, per HH.  After discussion with Asheville and PB, MM reintroduced colored rock boxes in layout.  MM printed copy of map for KT review.  After MM looked at printed map, MM adjusted angle of patterns for rock units in cross section.  Since the angle of the cross section is 41.57 degrees, MM put the pattern at -3 to make it look like a 45 degree angle on paper to match what the pattern looks like in the quad sheet.  MM adjusted the rock unit box for Zhqdp to reflect that the unit is a point, not a polygon.
7/15/15 – MM tried printing out a pdf of this quad, but the text was Times New Roman instead of Arial.  MM changed it and saved the new pdf into C and E drive folders.

Rolesville

Dear Diary – Rolesville
4/11/13 – MM began the process of upgrading this quadrangle to Arc 9.3. MM imported the Arc 3.2 file for Rolesville and saved it as Rolesville_DISTRIBUTABLE.mxd.  MM set up the Rolesville folders and the Rolesville Geodatabase.  MM saved the original files to the Shapefile folder and then MM started to thin out the herd to make the .mxd just made of feature classes.
4/22/14 – PB wanted to have map packages made for Rolesville and Knightdale, so MM prettied them up for export.  MM got the .mxd to just have feature classes, not shapefiles.  Then MM sent PB the map package for Rolesville.
4/30/14 – MM looked at the Rolesville folder for GSMCAD to locate the strike and dips for the structural symbols.  MM got those numbers and MM was prepared to create a new symbols layer which would include these symbols and the older symbols that were single dots.
5/1/14 – MM tried to create a new feature class for the GSMCAD structural symbols, but Arc wouldn’t allow MM to edit because it didn’t recognize that any shapefiles were opened in the Rolesville folder.  MM will try to rebuild the Rolesville folder to see if it will work.  Rebuilding it didn’t work and MM still have the same error message:

Red Oak

DearDiary - Red Oak
9/11/12 – I began the process of creating an .mxd.  I opened up the Red_Oak_GeoTiff.mxd and brought in the RedOak_Points_SM19_final2 shapefile.
9/12/12 – I changed the RedOak_Points_SM19_final2 shapefile into RedOak_AllPoints and began to change the attribute table to symbolize the points.  I placed all the points and arranged them around the central locations.  I then put out the dip numbers and began to arrange them around the symbols.
9/13/12 – I started with the day, but I realized on the southern portion of the map, Randy’s symbols have a problem.  The azimuth and the inclination are the same.  Apparently, when all the geologist’s files were merged into one, Randy’s got screwed up.  It took about 30 minutes to fix the problem.  Then I arranged the rest of the dip numbers around the symbols.
9/17/12 – I downloaded data from Heather for a new RedOak_Production.mxd.  I copied those five feature classes into the RedOak_DISTRIBUTION geodatabase as temp files and I will work on them after I have completed the other three maps.
9/21/12 – I brought in different layers and started to create the layout.  I downloaded files from Heather to create this.
9/22/12 (Sat.) – I continued to formulate this map.  I added rock units to the quadrangle and the cross section.  I brought in the rock unit text and adjusted the layout so everything would fit.  I completed the layout and printed a copy to give to Phil on Monday.
9/24/12 – 9/25/12 – I corrected Phil’s changes and my own changes and gave the map to Ken for review.
9/26/12 – I corrected Ken’s changes, made other minor adjustments and printed out a final copy for the USGS!  Finished!
10/8/13 – Once Essex was completed this Statemap cycle, there were edgematch problems with Red Oak.  Phil gave me some edits for the map, and I made the changes.  I sent him a revised pdf of the map.
1/4/16 - MM updated latest map of the Red Oak map to Google Drive:

Fayetteville 100k layout

Dear Diary - Fayetteville 100k layout 5/14/24 - Began the Fayetteville 100k layout project. Created the main 100k map, as well as 2 logos, ...
