Essex quadrangle

Dear Diary – Essex

7/24/13 – Phil emailed me Dave’s geologic map as a png.  He also emailed me the cross section.  As I was georeferencing the geologic map, I noticed that Dave had taped two pieces of paper together to create this map.  I still georeferenced it and we’ll see what happens.  Talked with Phil and we’ll continue this after the paper map comes in through the mail.

8/5/13 – I received Dave’s maps from Phil.  I scanned the three maps (Geology, Terrane, Xsection) and placed them in the PRODUCTION folder.  I rectified the Geology map, Terrane map and the Xsection.  I began to digitize the Qal contacts.

8/6/13 – I completed the Qal contacts and converted them into polygons.  I digitized the diabase contacts.  I digitized all the geologic contacts.  I converted them into polygons.  I labeled the polygons and I asked Phil what to do about all the tiny little pods of Jdb.  He’ll email Dave Blake and get back to me.

8/12/13 – I got a new computer on 8/7 and this was my first chance to try out Arc10 on Essex.  I have been carefully exploring the software to see what it will allow me to do (and do not).  I started by copying Skip’s lines over to the established linework for Essex.  I then symbolized the lines that weren’t already done.  I also connected Skip’s lines on the quad.

8/13/13 – I brought in the GeoTIFF from Phil for Essex.  I used Skip’s lines to create a new polygon layer.  I symbolized the polygons.

8/14/13 – I began digitizing the lines on the cross section.

8/15/13 – I finished digitizing the lines on the cross section.  I converted the lines to a polygon.  I put in attributes for the polygons.  I made the labels and started adjusting them.

8/16/13 – I completed adjusting the labels.  I began to add in details to complete the layout.  I added the lat/long to the quad.

8/21/13 – Added Essex_Other_Points_2013v1 to the quad.  I put in the blocks of text for the layout.  I put in the FGDC codes for most of the OrientationPoints feature class in the attribute table.

8/23/13 – I symbolized the OrientationPoints feature class.  I separated out the non-rotatable symbols and combined them with Heather’s Other_Points_2013v1 to create Essex_OtherPoints.  I extended the NW portion of the polygons.

8/26/13 – Mainly spent this day trying to figure out how to get a target layer on my Editor toolbar by going back to the 9.3 version of the toolbar.  Also changed a couple of points and created the Essex_ExcessStations feature class.

8/27 – 8/28/13 – I started arranging the symbols around their station locations and I also consulted with Phil about some questionable stations.

8/29/13 – I’ve got a new desk and a new chair.  I arranged all the symbols.

9/4/13 – I emailed Phil for a response to some questions about some questionable stations.  He will get back to me tomorrow.  I gave all the points their labels and saved these as an annotation layer.  I began to move the dip numbers to their proper positions.

9/5/13 – Made corrections per Phil’s request.  Crazy day…that’s all I had time for.

9/6/13 – Moved dip numbers to their proper positions.

9/7/13 – (Sat.) Finished placing dip numbers around the map.  Adjusted the rock unit description text in the layout.  Placed the symbols in the layout. Placed the stereoscopes in the layout.  Placed the geologist index in the layout.  Put 40% transparency in the cross section.  Sent all the diabase points from OrientationPoints to OtherPoints.  Improved the look of the symbols in the layout.

9/8/13 – (Sun.) Finished up the layout little details.  Saved as a pdf and sent it to Phil to look it over.

9/10/13 – Put in automatic labels for rock units so it would assist Phil in getting colors for rock units.  Phil later gave me corrections to make.  I made the axial surface symbol changes.  I made the ??? polygon changes on the quad and the cross section.  Awaiting Phil’s response to my email on cross section polygons.

9/11/13 – I was having trouble with the feature classes in the CSA Data Frame.  So I re saved them with at “2” at the end.  Everything seemed to work better after that.  I made the changes to the cross section after receiving comments from Phil.  I loaded the Terrane map into the layout.  I still need to put the labels on the map.

9/12/13 – Re-did the text on the Terrane map.  I put the shear zone polygon on the quad map.  I put more labels on the quad.  I saved the map as a pdf and sent it to Phil.

9/13/13 – I made all the corrections that Phil and Skip requested.  I emailed them back a pdf of the completed map.

9/16/13 – Phil and Skip send me another email with changes.  I made those corrections and emailed Phil and Skip the latest pdf.  Phil gave me two more edits, which I did, and then sent him another pdf.

9/20/13 – Some confusion today.  I sent him a pdf of the map, but there were several things missing on the map.  I might have brought in an .mxd from the E drive.  I made minor corrections to the .mxd I brought in from the C drive.  I also had to undo the 40% transparency that I had done to the MapUnitPolygons.  This is not needed with the new GeoTIFF as the base layer.  Once I finished this, I sent him a pdf.

9/23/13 – Phil sent me a HydrologyOnly GeoTIFF to put on top of the other tiff to make the rivers more visible.  I also printed out a flawed copy at the RFO and gave the map to Ken to edit.

9/24/13 – I made the changes to the map that Ken requested, as well as a couple of edits I requested, and finished the map.

9/26/13 – I printed two copies with the help of Steve Kaufman at the Geodetic Survey’s office in west Raleigh.  There may have been a flaw or two, but it’s too late and we have no plotter here to fix it.

11/08/13 – I did topology on several feature classes for Essex today.  I did the ContactsAndFaults for the quad and CSA, and I also did MapUnitPolys for the quad and CSA.  I was learning about how to do topology in Arc 10 and it has some plusses and minuses, but overall, I like it.  There were some bad flaws with ContactsAndFaults_NoQal, and I finally realized that this wasn’t the file to use.  I brought in ContactsAndFaults, which had some flaws of its own, but once the flaws were corrected and topology was done on this feature class, everything was fine.  I corrected the problems with the linework and polygons for Essex and I hope to start on some of the metadata next week.  We’ll see.  I did the metadata for ContactsAndFaults.

5/4/15 – ES said that his diabase on the SW portion of Essex were missing.  MM also noticed that the fold axes were missing.  MM wondered why they were gone, but went to the Essex_PRODUCTION folder and found copies of them both.  MM copied and pasted them into Essex_OtherLines.  MM then had to replace copies of pdf’s for Essex in on the C and E drives in the OpenFileReports folder.

5/11/15 – ES sent MM an Excel spreadsheet, as well as shapefiles.  MM tried to open Essex, but as the layout started opening, Arc quit the program.  MM hasn’t figured out why yet.  Same thing happened with the E drive version.

5/14/15 – PB sent MM a different copy of the .mxd for Essex and MM put it on his C drive.

5/18/15 – PB sent MM several emails with excel spreadsheets, which included one for DB and one for SS.  PB finally just sent MM the shapefiles for these two files.  PB watched MM combine the two and then made sure the Type column in the spreadsheet matched the Data Description file.  MM is prepared to add the FGDC code to the spreadsheet and move the dip numbers around.

5/26/15 – MM decided to re-build the .mxd for Essex, since the disappearing .mxd problems have continued.  MM then added SM_CODE values to Essex_North_OrientationPoints.

5/27/15 – MM modified the values in the spreadsheet and then arranged the symbols around their station location.  If all goes well, MM will place the dip numbers tomorrow.

5/28/15 – MM completing placing dip numbers around the Essex_North_OrientationPoints feature class.  MM determined what new symbols needed to be added to the layout descriptions.  MM adjusted the quartz vein color to yellow to match South Essex.

5/29/15 – MM expanded the height of the layout to 38 inches and arranged the new text and the additional new symbols into the layout.

6/1/15 – MM scanned DB’s two Essex maps and then georeferenced the two maps to the Essex_geoTIFF_no_air_photo_no_collar.tif.  After a futile attempt to use Reshape Feature Tool/Bezier curve to adjust ES’s NW_Essex_contacts, MM decided to just trace over the lines with no snapping and use this to begin the Essex_North_ContactsAndFaults feature class.  MM drew DB and ES’s north contacts.  Tomorrow will be the polygons from the linework.

6/2/15 – MM copied db_dikes to Essex_North_OtherLines.  MM converted lines from Essex_North_ContactsAndFaults to polygons.  MM labelled the interior of the polygons, but waiting on ES to determine the dividing line between CZfmv and CZmgs.  ES provided the dividing line, so MM divided the polygons.  MM also cleaned up some of the polygons between North and South Essex.

6/3/15 – MM assigned a color to the PPmm rock unit in the northeast corner of the quad.  MM reassigned a color to the CZmmv rock unit.  MM merged the north polygons with the south polygons.  MM loaded stereonets from PB email into Essex_PRODUCTION folder.  MM put these stereonets in the layout.  MM labelled polygons externally.  MM will print tomorrow.

6/4/15 – MM completed 7 of the 8 edits from 6/4 email from PB.  MM changed symbols with 0 for Incline.  MM printed out a copy of map.  Sent pdf to ES and PB for 2nd straight day.

6/5/15 – MM replaced DRG with new one from PB’s email today.  MM made edits after looking over the map.  PB added his comments, as well.  MM made another printout, made more corrections, took out fold lines in layout and saved another pdf for ES and PB.

6/8/15 – MM received an email from ES with more changes.  The two fold lines in the SW quadrant were missing and MM put them back on.  ES also noticed that the county lines were missing, so MM put them back on the map.  MM put in the third fold after an email from ES.

6/17/15 – MM converted .mxd to Arial text.

6/18/15 – MM printed a copy of the map.

6/19/15 – MM began to fix problems with symbols in the layout.  MM had to resymbolized the symbols.

6/22/15 – PB saved a new whole rock chart for MM and MM replaced that chart on the layout.  MM replaced the symbos with a backup copy on the E drive.  MM made some assorted edits, per ES.  MM printed out copy for review by KT.

6/24/15 – MM made edits to KT review of map.  MM printed out final copy.

6/25/15 – MM had computer repaired and used PB’s computer to make final edits on map.  MM put pdf of map on NCGS website.

6/26/15 – MM had to repair data source for C drive .mxd.  MM made images of Data Views, so that the quad and the GeoPDF will be pure.  Then MM saved the pdf to the NCGS website, after verifying with Global Mapper that it was a good GeoPDF.
11/6/15 - MM uploaded latest version of Essex map to Google Drive:

Edmondson quadrangle

Dear Diary – Edmondson

5/5/14 – Per PB’s instructions, MM is putting John Nickerson’s coastal plain units on the quadrangle.  MM found his latest version from the NEW_COASTAL_PLAIN_20111114.mxd that was clipped to the quadrangle and MM added it to the .mxd.  MM chose not to use PB’s version, CP_MapUnitPolys_Nickerson_most recent data.lpk because it’s the same thing that MM just put in.  MM used the .lpk colors for the rock units and transferred them to John’s feature class, which is ED_MapUnitPolys_Final.  MM changed the attribute table and made the diabase lines visible.  MM removed many feature classes that had more to do with Al and Bob’s version of Edmondson.  MM took out the Jd labels for the point diabase.  MM also took out the cpu labels.  MM put the new colors in the layout rock boxes.  MM put in the lat/long coordinates in the Data View and took them out of the Layout View.

5/16/14 – PB gave me a word file for Edmondson coastal plain units.  MM started putting that text in the layout.  MM also adjusted the text from Arial bold 11 to Times New Roman 9.  MM also cleaned up more text and symbols on the layout.  MM brought in the NCGS logo, and the map scales.  MM also made changes to the map that would make it more like the FGDC compatible maps.  MM also added in the declination.  MM will try labeling the rock units on Monday.

5/19/14 – MM began to work on the rock unit labels and change the dip numbers to make them FGDC compliant.  Then MM got an email from PB and started working on Rolesville.

5/20-21/14 – MM continued the sweep of the quad, making sure the polygons were labelled, the lines were formatted correctly and the dip numbers were correct.  MM finished then printed it out.

5/22/14 – MM corrected the mistakes on the printed-out map.  MM emailed the new pdf to PB.

7/14/14 – PB placed the new version of Edmondson on the T drive.  MM copied it to its proper place on the C drive, after MM made new folders for DISTRIBUTABLE  and PRODUCTION.  MM changed the Qal color to its correct color and MM alerted PB that Tphms is the same color as Qal.  MM brought in the images (declination and topo index) for the map.

7/15/14 – MM placed the rock unit text descriptions and the references descriptions in the layout.

7/17/14 – After printing out a copy, MM made edits and began to correct them.  MM dropped the text size to 7 for wells and core points.  MM made a few other minor edits, saved as a pdf and sent off to PB.

8/7/14 – MM did a little bit of topology for this quad, but most of it was too extensive, so MM just left it the way it is.

Clayton quadrangle

Dear Diary - Clayton
7/21/14 – MM getting a self-contained geodatabase ready for Clayton.
7/23/14 – MM removed CPO’s diabase lines, because Al and Bob’s were more detailed.  MM merged all the lines shapefiles into one feature class:  Clayton_ContactsAndFaults.
7/24/14 – MM formatted the lines in ContactsAndFaults.  MM added Al and Bob’s pavement and CPO’s gravel polygons to the OverlayPolys feature class.  MM merged all the point shapefiles into one ObservationPoints feature class.
7/25/14 – MM realized that the linework for the coastal plain units and the Qal do not quite match the latest polygons, so MM is going to get rid of the lines and have the polygons automatically draw their lines.  MM formatted the ObservationPoints feature class, then MM created an annotation layer for its various labels.  Then MM moved all the labels or dip numbers around their various points.
7/28/14 – MM completed moving the labels and numbers around.  MM labelled the polygons.  Some of the polygons extended past the bottom of the quad, so  MM had to clip the polygons to the quadbox, and replace that clipped polygon feature class with the original feature class without losing the text labels.  MM did this using ArcCatalog in a little bit of a maneuver.
7/29/14 – MM labelled the diabase lines.  MM double-checked that all the polygons were labelled.  MM put in the two Al and Bob cross section lines.  MM put in some of the layout details, including the index box, title and disclaimers.
7/30/14 – MM added some rock unit text and tried to get it close to finished.
7/31/14 – MM added color boxes for some units, then MM brought in the declination symbol.  Then MM cleaned up the symbol section and crossed all the T’s and dotted all the I’s.  MM printed it out and sent Phil a pdf.
8/6/14 – MM did topology on the MapUnitPolys.  There were three errors and MM fixed them.
8/27/14 - HH received Clayton folder from PB, which was copied to HH’s C: drive. HH Edited the attribute table of Clayton_ObservationPoints file so it would match Zebulon and Clayton for easier merging for full Wake County compilation.

Cedar Grove quadrangle

Dear Diary – Cedar Grove

7/6/09 – PB sent me a combined Caldwell/Cedar Grove shapefile for polylines and stations.  MM divided the shapefiles into separate station files and polylines for each quadrangle.  MM created a new mdb for Cedar Grove and brought in the DRG.

7/22/09 – PB sent me a zip file with polylines for Caldwell/Cedar Grove.  MM clipped this feature class by the two quads and then ran topology on it.  MM then used the topology to identify and correct the errors.  MM used the toolbox in ArcInfo to create polygons from the polylines feature class.  Then MM sent the polygon shapefile back to PB to attribute the polygons.

7/23/09 – MM brought in the cross section tif image and rectified it to the end points of the cross section line.  MM then drew the lines for the cross section and used ArcToolbox to create polygons from those lines.  Then MM finished drawing the lines and placed text labels on the cross section.

8/3/09 – MM modified the layout to make it landscape (per FGDC conventions), and inserted the various pieces (xsection, scale bar, map location, etc.) that MM had at this point.

8/6/09 – PB came in and we worked on both Caldwell and Cedar Grove.  PB brought over the latest (and hopefully, last) polylines, and images for the layout.  MM put the rose diagrams and stratigraphy on the layout and then put the polylines in the view.  However, MM did notice that there was a gap between where the polygons that were derived from the polylines were, and where they should have been.  MM was going to fix the problem tomorrow and make sure the polygons and polylines are where they’re supposed to be.

8/7/09 – MM corrected the mistakes from yesterday by basically starting from scratch.  MM took PB’s latest polylines and did topology on them.  There were more mistakes than MM anticipated.  Once those were corrected, MM created polygons from the lines and then used the previous polygons to internally label the new rockunits.  Then MM externally labelled the rock units.

8/12/09 - MM split up the stations into juststations, lineation, single and multiple foliations.  MM then began to place the dip numbers around the symbols.  MM had trouble moving the points connected with the dip numbers, so MM just moved the dip numbers without moving the points for the text shapefiles.

8/13/09 – Finished moving dip numbers and then printed out the map.  Made changes to the map.

8/14/09 – Printed out the map again and made final changes.  Ready to hand off to SS on Monday.

8/17/09 – Handed over Cedar Grove and Caldwell to SS so that PB could make changes and corrections.

8/28/09 – PB was here today and MM made the corrections that he requested for this quadrangle.  We made other assorted corrections and printed out the map.  MM will take one last look and then Ken will look at it before we wrap it up.

8/29/09 – Made final corrections on Cedar Grove.

11/6/15 -  MM uploaded latest version of Cedar Grove map to Google Drive:

Cary quadrangle

Dear Diary – Cary (new version)

1/21/16 - MM saved final pdf NCGS_OFR_2016-02_Cary_QR in Portal Document Library (http://portal.ncdenr.org/c/document_library/get_file?p_l_id=1169848&folderId=15250710&name=DLFE-121692.pdf).  MM placed the Cary map in the Online Store for sale (http://nc-maps.stores.yahoo.net/gemapofca7qu1.html).

1/15/16 - MM changed back to the correct colors for CZbr1 and CZbr2.  MM added new table per PB's request.  MM added mapping dates text.  MM made sure CSA and CSB reflected the changes back to CZbr1 and CZbr2.  MM printed out the map for KBT.

1/14/16 - MM began making last edits per KBT.  Halfway through converting CZbru and CZbrl to CZbr1 and CZbr2.

1/6/2016 - MM made additional edits to Cary quad.  Will wait for PB to return on 1/8 to finish the remaining edits.

1/5/2016 - MM started making edits to Cary quad, per KBT edits.  MM completed edits to CSB, but will have to wait to talk with PB on changes to east side of CSB on 1/8.  Will continue with correcting other edits on 1/6.

11/30/2015 - Edit to make - Add what the "sticks and balls" on the brittle normal faults represent on the explanation.

11/6/15 - MM uploaded latest version of Cary map to Google Drive:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BxSMuI20Ka_kcGcxdUNlbWxvNWs
10/16/14 – MM made the rest of PB’s edits and emailed him back the pdf.  MM also standardized the fault arrows using the FGDC arrows.

10/8/14 – MM got PB’s email back and started to make his changes.  MM made the first three changes on his email.

10/3/14 – MM changed the Cenozoic symbol to C, and the Triassic symbol to Tr in the rock descriptions.  MM printed out the quad and MM made some corrections.  There were a few more questions that MM had and MM emailed PB the GeoPDF to get some clarity.

10/2/14 – MM changed all the files in each MapView so that now the .mxd is self-contained.  MM also changed three symbols in the symbols section of the layout.

10/1/14 – MM started making Cary self-contained in one database.  First, MM combined the foliations, geo_chem_sites, lineations, and the nonrot_symbols into the foliations shapefile.  Then, MM swept the map adjusting the newly drawn symbols and their dip numbers to get them in the right place.  MM then transferred the remaining shapefiles into feature classes on the C drive in the Cary_DISTRIBUTABLE folder.  MM still have to do the other Map Views and then MM have to change some of the symbols in the layout area.  MM changed the lineations symbols today to better reflect the FGDC bible.

9/25/14 – MM completed the sweep and sent Phil a pdf.

9/24/14 – MM placed the text in CSA and moved on to CSB.  MM added a text item to CSB.  MM moved onto the Quad layer.  MM brought in 9 shapefiles from the CaryLifeboat folder.  MM then brought in all the .lyr files for these shapefiles.  MM then started a sweep from left to right changing the ^ to Tr, changing the width of leader bars from .25 to .5 and changing the location of dip numbers.  It might take a few days to complete.

9/5/14 – MM completed the changes for cross section A and MM brought in stuff for CSB (contacts, leader bars, polygons and their layer files.  MM still need to put text in CSA on vertical leader bar.

9/4/14 – MM started this project again and worked on the CrossSection A Data View.  MM brought in shapefiles from the CaryLifeboat folder in the Cary folder on the E drive.  This includes the contacts and polygons for the cross section.  MM also brought in the layer files in the CaryLifeboat folder.  MM labelled the CSA, but the text labels were too large, so MM shrunk them to 6.  (MM later dropped them to size 5.)

4/4/14 – MM copied the layout from an old .mxd and pasted it into a new Cary_DISTRIBUTABLE.mxd.  MM did not copy the old quad data frame or the two cross section data frames.  MM wanted to start those fresh, without the taint of previous geodatabases.  MM brought in two copies of the Cary tif.  MM brought in the merged polygons layer and MM copied/pasted the text blocks from the old Cary .mxd.  This will have the rock unit labels, the leader bars and the dip numbers.  If this doesn’t work, that means a lot of work.

4/3/14 – MM had earlier realized that the Cary geodatabase was corrupt.  MM could open the .mxd, but nothing after that.  There was either an incompatibility problem going from 9.3 to 10.0, or in the switch from an old computer to a new computer, something got lost.  The .mdb had 0 MB in it and perhaps, since this must have been a personal geodatabase, things got lost.  Anyway, MM had to rebuild the geodatabase.  MM had to go to my old computer and open up the geodatabase that was in 9.3.  MM saved all the feature classes as shapefiles onto the thumb drive and MM brought it onto my computer.  When MM repaired the data source for one of the feature classes with a shapefile, everything all of a sudden worked.  MM then created a new file geodatabase and MM will repopulate it in the next few days, if nothing gets in the way.

Caldwell quadrangle

Dear Diary – Caldwell

7/6/09 – PB sent MM a combined Caldwell/Cedar Grove shapefile for polylines and stations.  MM divided the shapefiles into separate station files and polylines for each quadrangle.

7/24/09 – MM brought in the cross section tif image and rectified it to the end points of the cross section line.

Then MM moved on to Cedar Grove and repeated the process again.

8/10/09 – MM split up the stations into juststations, lineation, single and multiple foliations.  MM then began to place the dip numbers around the symbols.  MM had trouble moving the points connected with the dip numbers, so MM just moved the dip numbers without moving the points for the text shapefiles.

8/11/09 – MM moved the remaining dip numbers to their proper locations.  MM then turned inferred lines into concealed lines where they crossed Qal.  MM brought the rock unit descriptions into the layout and also created colored boxes to go next to the descriptions.  MM changed the layout from landscape to portrait, due to the lack of stuff to fill the space.  MM basically finished the quad and will print out a copy tomorrow and look it over.  Then MM will continue with Cedar Grove.

8/12/09 – MM printed Caldwell, then made subsequent changes.  MM also thinned the layout from 37 inches to 33 inches.

8/13/09 – MM printed one more copy and made more changes to the map.  It’s ready to give to SS.

8/17/09 – MM gave Cedar Grove and Caldwell to SS, so that PB could make changes and corrections.

8/28/09 – PB was here today and MM made the corrections that he requested for this quadrangle.  We made other assorted corrections and printed out the map.  MM will take one last look and then Ken will look at it before we wrap it up.

8/29/09 – Made final corrections on Caldwell.

11/6/15 - MM uploaded latest version of Caldwell map to Google Drive:

Bynum quadrangle

Dear Diary – Bynum
4/9/21 - MM goofed off with the quadrangle yesterday in ArcPro. MM was able to start a Map, bring in the OrientationPoints, import the Symbology, navigate to the LayerFiles folder in the DISTRIBUTABLE folder and brought in the layer. It worked. It looks like the work computer has everything needed to create the symbols. However, MM tried the same thing on the laptop and it didn't work. More work needed to think about this.
4/1/11 – Received the Bynum_PRODUCTION.mxd from HH by email.

4/4/11 – Began and completed work on Bynum.  Added SM_CODE to the points file and coded the symbols.  Then MM rotated them, added dip numbers as an annotation table, moved the dip numbers, labeled the rock unit labels and put this all in a zip file.  MM then sent it off to HH and PB.

9/8/13 – MM figured out what MM needed to do for Bynum.  Apparently, PB and HH had created Bynum_Production.mxd and all MM have to do is pretty it up and bring in layout elements and the rock unit descriptions.  Well, that and all the symbols.  Oh, well…  MM brought in the layout elements and put in the corner coordinates.  MM put in the SM_CODE for the symbols.  They are ready to be symbolized.

9/9/13 – MM had to resave everything into a new geodatabase, because RFO had done their .mxd in ArcInfo and the .mxd wouldn’t let me edit in ArcView.  MM began to move the symbols around to more clear locations.

9/10/13 – MM finished moving the symbols around.  MM brought in the dip numbers as annotation and MM got the .mxd ready to move the dip numbers tomorrow.  If all goes well…

9/16/13 – Ok, now back to our story…  MM began moving the dip numbers to their proper place.

9/17/13 – MM finished moving the dip numbers.  MM began labeling the rock units and making dotted contacts through the Qal polygons.

9/18/13 – MM finished labeling the rock units and making dotted contacts.  MM also labeled the Jd lines and put the correct symbols on the fold lines.  MM put the diabase points in the OtherPoints feature class.  Fixed CSA.  Tried fixing CSB, but didn’t have chance to fix Qal polygons.  Perhaps ask PB who did these tomorrow.

9/19/13 – Unfixed CSA.  After talking with PB, MM realized MM was doing the cross sections incorrectly.  MM have to use the cross section line that goes across the top, not where the Qal crosses the profile line.  MM will have to think about that more later.  MM made some more changes to the two cross sections.  MM went to the layout, added the symbols, added the rock unit descriptions and colored boxes and MM was finished.  MM made some additional minor adjustments and saved it as a pdf and emailed it to PB, and later, SS.

9/20/13 – Made minor corrections to map per PB’s request.  This included overturned lines in the layout, on unlabeled line in SE corner of the map, minor adjustment to the correlation diagram and labeling the purple dikes.  After these were completed, MM emailed him a pdf of the map.

9/23/13 – MM got a copy of a HydrologyOnly GeoTIFF from PB to put on top of the base tif to make the water features more visible.  MM printed out a flawed copy of the map at the RFO and gave it to Ken for edits.

9/24/13 – MM made the changes to the map that Ken requested, as well as a couple of edits MM requested, and finished the map.

9/26/13 – MM printed two copies with the help of Steve Kaufman at the Geodetic Survey’s office in west Raleigh.  There may have been a flaw or two, but it’s too late and we have no plotter here to fix it.

10/1/13 – Cleaning up the quad.  MM took out some unnecessary feature classes, then MM saved LayerFiles and shapefiles to folders in the DISTRIBUTABLE folder.

11/08/13 – During the week, MM was doing topology for all the feature classes for Bynum.  Today, MM did the topology for the Contacts and Faults and the MapUnitPolys for the quad and both cross sections.

11/5/14 - MM uploaded latest version of Bunn East map to Google Drive:

Bunn West quadrangle

Dear Diary- Bunn West

8/19/14 – HH let MM know that BunnWest was on the T drive for MM to load onto MM's computer.  MM put the folder on MM's C drive and then MM began the processs of putting the files in the right folders and having the feature class names become similar to the FGDC recommendations.

8/20/14 – MM added the longitude and latitude coordinates to the quad.  MM changed the feature class names to that which are more FGDC compliant.  MM brought in all the layout stuff and adjusted them for Bunn West.

8/21/14 - MM talked with PB and MM now has Dear Diary - BunnWest (Patent Pending) on Google Drive so that PB and HH can see it as well.  Transferred Dear Diary information to Google Drive under BunnWest_Map_Status.  MM brought in the rock unit descriptions, along with the colored text boxes.  MM also added the References text block.  MM added the rock polygon text labels to the polygons on the quadrangle.  (3 different annotation feature classes were created to achieve this.)  MM labelled the Jd lines and broke them up into inferred and concealed contacts.  MM labelled all the observation points that needed to be labelled.  MM separated observation points that were on top of each other.  MM is arranging the contacts and symbols on the layout.

9/3/14 – Finished placement of symbols in layout explanation.  Adjusted colored box text next to rock unit descriptions in layout.

9/4/14 – MM made the rock unit letters and name BOLD in rock unit descriptions.  MM printed a copy to view and edit.  MM made a couple of edits and emailed HH and PB a pdf copy of Bunn West.

9/25/14 – MM made more edits from HH’s email today.  MM made adjustments to the rock unit descriptions, references, symbols and acknowledgements.

10/16/14 – MM made two more edits from HH’s email today.  MM emailed HH the new pdf.
11/5/14 - MM uploaded latest version of Bunn East map to Google Drive:
